Now we are ready to wrap up the school year with our "old" second graders. Please mark your calendar for several special May activities. Language Arts By now your child has had the opportunity to sign up for the Fifth Annual Second Grade Talent Show. Second graders have shown a lot of interest in the talent show and it appears that there is a wide variety of talent. Students were no doubt inspired by their teachers after seeing their rare talents of doing the splits, whistling with fingers while doing the hula hoop, reading upside down, stacking cups, and blowing bubbles. Remember there is a curriculum connection to all of this, which is our current reading theme "Talent Show." The talent show will be May 7 and 9. A note will be sent home informing you when your child will perform. Math The second grade math program is rigorous and challenging. Currently we are working on multiplication and division. Other objectives that will be taught by the end of the year are identifying place value to 1,000, comparing three-digit numbers, and using tables to extend number patterns and solve problems. Keep working on the addition and subtraction basic facts! Integrated Studies This week we started the unit "People Making History." We will study the contributions that African, Asian, European, Hispanic, Mideast Asian, and Native Americans have made to our country. Students will learn about George Washington Carver, Billy Wong, Cesar Chavez, Mother Teresa, Sacagawea, Louis Braille, Harriet Tubman, Wilma Rudolph, Helen Keller, and Anne Frank. We will finish up the year with "Safety on the Move." Second Grade "Sleepover" Many wonderful friendships have been nurtured this year. Ira Sleeps Over by Bernard Weber is a book that is shared with second graders about a special friendship between two boys. To celebrate our many new and old friendships, we will be having a pretend sleepover. On May 23 second graders will have a "sleepover" from 9:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. in their homerooms. Students can bring their pajamas, pillow, blanket, a snack and drink, a favorite stuffed toy, or a game. Games can be a board, card, or hand held video game. Children can change into their pajamas at school so they have school clothes to wear the rest of the day. Please do not send sleeping bags. Camp Humann To culminate a great second grade year we are going to have "Camp Humann" on the last day of school May 30. We will be doing camp type activities. We will have our regular school lunch on that day. However, students can bring a snack for the afternoon. It should be a fun time in second grade to the very end! Farewell! It has been a wonderful school year! We have loved getting to know your children and watching them grow academically and socially. We have been humbled by the generosity of our parents who have donated so much of their time and resources this year. Thank you so much! We will miss our second graders but we know they will continue to unfold their many gifts and talents as they continue through school. Have a terrific summer!
