Beautiful Butterflies

STAGE ONE

Butterflies lay eggs. The larva inside is protected by the hard outer shell. The shell is called the chorion. Inside, the egg is lined with wax. Not all eggs are the same shape or size.

STAGE TWO

Larva have three body parts.  They are called the head, thorax, and abdomen. The caterpillar has six eyes, but it cannot see very well. It uses antennae to find its way around.  Caterpillars breathe through holes in the side of their bodies. Larva have a two sets of legs - real legs and five false legs called prolegs.

STAGE THREE

As the butterfly pupates, it splits the exoskeleton and the larval skin comes off. When the skin is part of the way off, the cremaster appears. It is a spiny part at the end of the abdomen that the baby butterfly hangs from until it is strong enough to fly. Some think it hangs from it's feet, but that is not true.

STAGE FOUR

The adult butterfly has three body parts. They are the head, thorax, and abdomen. Butterflies have six legs, however many think there are only four because it curls up the front ones. A butterflies tongue is called a proboscis. There are two sets of wings - hind wings and forewings.
