Art Grade Two

Art Grade Two

We are starting this year with a study of Space

(it's one of the Elements of Art!)

The problem we have to solve:

How can you design a space that a butterfly would like to live in?

(This project correlates with classroom curriculum being studied at this time.)

Since we are working on a flat piece of paper, students were asked to design the space using "visual tricks" that artists' use to make their place look like it actually goes back in space.

We used:

Location- things at the bottom of the paper are close, things at the top are far away.

Size- things close to us are big, things farther away are small.

Overlapping-things in front of other things are closer.

Detail-things close to us show detail, things far away are fuzzy.

Color- things close to us seem colorful and bright, things far away fade out and appear dull.

Look at these works of art.

Can you see how space has been created using these "tricks"?

Here are some of our works of art! Most of us created interesting gardens for our butterflies to land in.

Look closely for these important qualities:

Size, location, overlapping, detail, and color.

Can you find the butterfly in each piece?
